Sr. UX Researcher at Avalara

Avalara’s UX team is growing and we need an experienced Senior UX Researcher to gather insights about our users and be a champion of their needs. This position will partner with product teams to identify research opportunities, take the lead on administering usability tests, and help our team craft compelling experiences.

Job Duties

 

  • Design is an iterative process: Welcome feedback and ­work effectively with team members and stakeholders (Product, Engineering, etc.)
  • Drives user research strategy to create personas, map user journeys, and document user behavior and attitudes
  • Translate research findings into clear insights that can be turned into actionable product requirements
  • Present and evangelize research insights throughout the organization and during the entire product development lifecycle
  • Develop and moderate online, in-person usability studies, and administer surveys through all stages of product development and while in production
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative user data to generate tactical and strategic insights, as well as actionable recommendations
  • Coordinate and conduct hypothesis-based A/B testing
  • Travel: approx. 10%

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, or Information Science.

[In lieu of professional degrees, 5-10 years equivalent professional experience]

  • Track record of pushing forward user-centered design processes, design thinking, and design leadership principals across organizations
  • Exceptional behavioral data-collection and analysis skills
  • Strong experience integrating qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
  • We expect that a good researcher can learn tools. We use Sketch (with the Craft Library plugin) to design, our prototyping is done with InVision, user analysis is done with FullStory and Adobe Analytics, and our main source of sugar is Swedish Fish

 

 

Experience

 

  • 5+ years experience in applied product research with demonstrated impact
  • 3+ years experience conducting research within a product organization focused on SaaS solutions.
  • 3+ years experience conducting research for products with complex organizational hierarchies and persona sets
  • Mobile experience a plus
  • Management experience a plus
  • Experience with current UX tools including InVision and FullStory, or equivalent applications and solutions
  • Portfolio (if possible) showcasing applied knowledge of usability and user-centered design. UX documents that include personas, journey maps, flows, and testing plans a plus
